Interior Design for Élan Coffee Bar
At élan, coffee takes centre stage beneath a sculptural speaker.
Snøhetta transformed Magnat Kaffehus’s former Oslo showroom into élan, a public coffee bar centered on shared brewing rituals. The interior combines a circular stained-oak counter, heat-treated cork furniture and sculpture, and a turquoise ceiling-mounted sound installation inspired by the coffee cherry.
Insights- At Magnat Kaffehus’s former Oslo showroom, Snøhetta placed a circular stained-oak counter at the centre of the café to encourage interaction between guests and baristas around the brewing process.
- The turquoise installation above the counter draws its colour from raw coffee beans and echoes the building’s oxidized copper ornamentation; the same turquoise carries into the visual identity alongside deep brown.
- The suspended sculpture is also a directional loudspeaker. Jonas von der Fehr’s gradually evolving composition lets visitors move into and out of the sound as they move through the café.
- Heat-treated cork links the sculptural volume beside the counter with custom furniture designed by Snøhetta and made by Henriksen Snekkeri. Its porous surface also contributes to the interior’s acoustics.
- TIBE Oslo further developed and implemented the visual identity begun by Snøhetta, creating facade and window graphics, merchandise, coffee labels and cards, and animations for office screens and other digital uses.
