Wordmark Redesign for Instagram
Instagram changed the wordmark just enough for one letter to start an argument.
Koto redesigned Instagram’s iconic wordmark to serve as a flexible global brand asset across products, campaigns, creator programs, and new apps. The evolved script preserves the familiar handcrafted character of the original while aligning more closely with Instagram’s glyph and wider identity system.
Insights- This is a calibration project rather than a reinvention. Koto keeps enough memory of the old script to preserve recognition while giving the wordmark a cleaner structure and a closer relationship with the camera glyph.
- Exploring hundreds of variations makes sense at Instagram's scale. The design problem lives in tiny decisions about curves, spacing and connection, not in finding a dramatic new concept.
- The simplified r in the gr ligature is the most interesting detail because it carries both authorship and risk. It gives the mark a signature, yet it is also where some viewers stop reading Instagram and see Instagzam.
- A mark this familiar does not need perfect first pass legibility in isolation. It does need the unusual letterforms to feel inevitable after repetition, otherwise the claimed human touch will read as mannerism.
