Type Design For A Contemporary Font Family
Schick Toikka's Lateral is a contemporary superfamily designed with a focus on sideways expansion. Named after the Latin term 'lateralis', the type family encompasses a significant range of widths and weights, showcasing the intricacies of typography. The design embraces modernity through a systematic approach, reminiscent of the works of Adrian Frutiger. Lateral features flat sections at the extremes of curves, producing a unique aesthetic that combines brutalist elements with functional versatility. The variable font includes three axes—width, weight, and slant—controlled by 56 masters, resulting in a comprehensive family of 98 styles suitable for various applications, from all-purpose typesetting to display use.
