Brand Identity for Women+ On the Edge of Democracy
Thirty-six playwrights, one hand-drawn invitation to gather and listen.
Pentagram created an identity for Women+ on the Edge of Democracy, a nationwide initiative presenting short plays and monologues about American democracy and civic life. The system uses expressive hand-drawn typography across project materials and the cover of a forthcoming play anthology.
Insights- Scher’s hand-drawn typography is the central design device; Pentagram connects its expressive character with the project’s urgency and collective spirit.
- The identity extends to the anthology cover, linking a distributed performance initiative with a physical collection of its texts.
- The organizers allow hosts to choose one, several or all 36 plays. Editorial reading: a common identity helps many local formats belong to the same initiative without requiring a single production.
- The invitation addresses libraries, schools and informal groups as well as theaters. The design serves a broad call to participate, beyond promotion of one venue’s program.
