A Brooklyn corner bar finds its voice in New York subway lettering.
Order created the identity for Sonny’s Corner, a bar at Franklin Street and Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn. The project connects the new establishment with its neighbourhood through typography and colour. Its central typeface, Oppy Sans, was revived by Benjamin Tuttle from Amelia Opdyke Jones’s hand-drawn lettering for The Subway Sun, a series of New York subway public-service announcements. A single style of the typeface carries the identity across signage, identification and packaging. Deep red complements the bar’s wood interior and seating, with neutral tones drawn from secondary materials. A supporting motto brings together references to the lettering’s history, the owner’s newborn son Sonny and the corner’s afternoon sunlight. Jesse Reed led the project for Order, working with Tuttle on the typographic foundation.
