Brand Identity for Bonnie Clyde Eyewear
They used Shakespeare to scale an eyewear cult.
Mouthwash Studio evolved Bonnie Clyde's eyewear identity from a cult favorite into a scalable, romance-led brand world. Grounded in Shakespearean drama and historical visual research, the system combines a custom wordmark, expressive illustration, rich color, content direction, web design, motion, and augmented reality.
Insights- A breakout product had moved Bonnie Clyde beyond its cult audience; Mouthwash’s task was to scale the identity without losing the label’s creative edge.
- Mouthwash deliberately pushed past generic romance and used Shakespeare as the narrative filter, arguing that “romance” alone can look like anything, while Shakespearean devotion gives the brand rules, depth, and a reason to embellish.
- Historical research wasn’t just decorative: Anglo-Saxon manuscripts shaped the custom wordmark, Renaissance masterworks informed color, and scripts, cherubs, and family crests were combined into a modern mythology; the client’s request for “Live Laugh Love” was translated into Latin and hidden in the illustrations.
- The system expanded far beyond logo and packaging, extending into content direction, web design, motion, and augmented reality, with credits including photographers Brian Kanagaki and Zac Serrano, illustrator Nick D'Apolito, UGC video creator Suzie Maez, and type reel by Lucas Hesse.
- Cultural timing helped the strategy land: competitors were leaning into minimalism and restraint just as fashion was rediscovering romance, fantasy, craft, and self-expression, while Bonnie Clyde already had celebrity momentum from Beyoncé in 2019 and Bella Hadid, Hailey Bieber, and Kendall Jenner in 2024.
