Brand Identity For A Decentralized Exchange
Is Dexter the cutest mascot… selling you a dystopia?
Koto’s Berlin studio developed a retro-futuristic brand identity for MachineX, a decentralized exchange where humans and machines trade in the emerging Machine Economy. The concept ‘Human x Machine’ guided a visual system that blends nostalgic sci-fi influences with warmth and optimism, embodied by the robot mascot Dexter. The result is a world-built identity that humanizes advanced technology while maintaining a bold digital presence.
Insights
- Main tension: Koto’s warm, nostalgic retro-futurism deliberately fights “sterile tech” and even softens an arguably dystopian premise— Creative Bloq calls it “dystopia masquerading as a utopia,” questioning what’s beneath the cute mascot and playful design.
- Koto’s core strategy was the brand idea “Human x Machine” as a manifesto/worldview: a future where physical and digital blur and “AIs, AI agents, robots, humans, smart cities and natural systems transact freely and autonomously,” avoiding default crypto/AI tropes.
- Concrete identity decisions: inspiration from Star Wars’ Mos Eisley and Isaac Asimov; a vivid digital-first palette (vivid primaries + strong neutrals); an all-caps custom serif wordmark with sharp asymmetric serifs and “sculpted rather than drawn” clean lines; type stack includes Feature Deck Condensed (headlines) plus ABC Rom and ABC Rom Mono.
- Worldbuilding system: illustrative landscapes and narrative-heavy composition (full-bleed hero moments, layered collages, spot illustrations) to make the exchange feel like a lived-in marketplace—anchored by mascot DEX/Dexter, framed as an autonomous being “not just a tool,” giving emotional warmth to an abstract Machine Economy.
- Proof it performed: post-launch MachineX reported 236,000+ trades from 9,858 unique addresses; October 2025 volume exceeded $20M, with total volume passing $57M. Co-founder JD Cook said Koto “challenged the traditional grit of cyberpunk-futuristic aesthetics” with optimistic community-forward retro-futurism, adding “Our community absolutely loves the brand, and our mascot; Dexter.”
