Brand Identity for MovieScout Bilingual Film Platform

Why make movie search visually neutral?

Daughter developed the brand identity for MovieScout (CinéScout), a bilingual platform that aggregates every film playing in theatres across Canada. The design positioned MovieScout as a trusted guide for movie discovery, with a visual system inspired by the cinema experience and scouting motifs to evoke exploration and confidence.

Insights

Daughter’s core move was to build MovieScout as a trusted guide, not another directory, because Canada had no single place to find theater showtimes and the existing aggregator-style services were algorithm-driven and popularity-biased.
The first bilingual insight is structural: MovieScout and CinéScout were developed simultaneously, so English and French identities feel native rather than translated versions of one another.
The most consequential design decision was a deliberately “visually neutral” interface, paired with equal visual presence for independent Canadian films and major studio releases so audiences—not hierarchy—decide what deserves attention.
The identity system pulled directly from the cinema experience: typography echoes the curve of a theatre screen, and the bold icon set references scouting badges, making the “scout” concept functional as navigation, not just decoration.
The platform launched on April 7, 2026 with practical discovery tools like genre, language, time-of-day and theatre filters, plus trailers, cast, synopses, cross-venue showtime comparison, and direct ticketing links; founders Lauren Jacob and Marissa Mandel-Murray framed it as making it as easy to see what’s playing in your neighborhood as it is to choose what to watch at home.
