Colt reimagined the brand identity for The Grand Hotel Birmingham, a historic landmark reborn after a major restoration. The new identity blends timeless elegance with a modern, irreverent edge, featuring a bespoke monogram inspired by Birmingham’s silversmith heritage and refined visual elements that connect the hotel’s architecture to its renewed sense of luxury.

- Colt’s main idea was “good manners with edge”: a brand identity that keeps the Grand Hotel Birmingham elegant and historic, but deliberately avoids nostalgia. The strapline, “History in the Making,” frames heritage as something ongoing rather than frozen in the past.
- The visual system includes a modern wordmark, a bespoke monogram, and an anchor motif inspired by Birmingham’s historic silversmith’s mark. Colt also pulled graphic assets from the hotel’s architecture and created bespoke illustrations to connect the identity back to the building.
- The palette goes surprisingly light for a Victorian grand hotel, using a cool baby blue alongside refined minimal styling. Physical touchpoints included gold foil-blocked business cards, key cards and holders, tote and paper bags, and door hangers.
- The Grand Hotel itself brings a strong story: a French Renaissance-style landmark on Colmore Row, commissioned by Isaac Horton and designed by Thomson Plevins, opened in 1879, and protected as Grade II* listed in 2004. It closed in 2002, underwent a long restoration from 2012 to 2021, and reopened with 185 bedrooms plus bars, a restaurant, gym, meeting rooms, and event spaces.
- Colt’s scope extended beyond the logo into brand positioning, tone of voice, website design, email templates, brand guidelines, print, and advertising, showing this was a full hospitality system rather than a standalone mark.
