Character Animation System for Google Pixel 9 Fold
Google turned a phone screen into a character stage.
BUCK collaborated with Google to create 'Made You Look,' a playful feature for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold that transforms the phone’s outer display into an interactive character stage. Using expressive animations and machine learning, the system encourages genuine smiles by responding in real time to subtle facial cues. The result is a joyful, spontaneous experience that bridges technology and emotion.
Insights- BUCK’s main idea was to make the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s outer display feel like a playful character stage, not a standard interface, through the “Made You Look” feature that reacts to subtle facial cues.
- The system combines expressive animation with machine learning so the phone responds in real time, aiming to trigger genuine smiles and create a spontaneous, emotionally engaging experience.
- The design approach is explicitly modular, adaptive, and whimsical, using motion as the primary bridge between technology and emotion rather than just decoration.
- Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold becomes part of the interaction itself: the outer screen is transformed into an interactive performance space, making the device feel alive and responsive.
