Visual Effects for Annette
An entire digital concert arena surrounds one physical puppet.
The Annette case on The Mill’s portfolio documents more than 160 VFX shots for Leos Carax’s film, which opened Cannes in 2021. The Paris and Liège teams combined a CG boat-scene wave, invisible puppet compositing and a digital concert arena around the physical puppet.
Insights- For Annette, the Paris and Liège VFX teams worked with Leos Carax before filming to decide which elements would be built practically and which would be completed digitally.
- The boat sequence combines a projected wave with CG work, while invisible compositing removes the puppet’s cables, joints and mechanisms.
- In the Hyperbowl sequence, the arena, audience, drones, pyrotechnics and sky are digital; the puppet remains the physical element at the centre.
- The studio reports completing more than 160 VFX shots in five months. Guillaume Pondard supervised the effects, with Géraldine Thiriart as VFX producer.
- This is work for the film that opened Cannes in 2021, rather than a new 2026 production.
