Custom Typeface Development For A Finnish Design Studio
Krana Fat is a unique display typeface inspired by the lettering of Finnish graphic designer Erkki Toukolehto. Unlike typical digital fonts that are uniform and systematic, Krana Fat channels the unpredictable movements of Toukolehto’s brushwork. It serves as both an homage and a new creation, possessing a soft contour while avoiding any imitation of handmade strokes. The typeface blends aspects of typography and lettering, drawing influences from vernacular signage and engineered alphabets. Initially used in the award-winning publication ‘Die Zeitschrift der Strasse’, Krana Fat features two distinct styles: A (condensed) and B (extended), designed to be mixed for lively typography. Additional accents provide varied use cases, allowing for creative text arrangements and dynamic headlines.
