Brand Identity and Website for Nominal
Milkshake Studio reshaped Nominal’s strategy, verbal identity, and visual system for its AI-powered accounting workflow platform. The work translates the speed and efficiency of automated financial operations into a dimensional spreadsheet-inspired brand and digital experience.
Insights- The whole identity comes from one metaphor: adding another dimension to the almighty spreadsheet. Cells and grid gain volume, so the format the product automates becomes the thing the brand is built from.
- That inversion is the honest part. A brand for accounting AI built on affection for the spreadsheet, rather than on escaping it, sits closer to how the work actually feels than a promise of liberation would — the pitch is to run the entire close with agents, less manual work and more big picture, not to abolish the ledger.
- The mark reads two ways at once: a lowercase n, and stacked cells lifted into volume. The graphics around it are deliberately hard — heavy type, blunt colour — which cuts against the thin, airy, pastel default of AI startup branding and is most of the reason the work stands out.
- There is no strict grid underneath. Shapes are made by subtracting rectangles from rectangles, and the absence of a rigid module leaves the system room to breathe rather than locking it to a formula.
- The client is a two-year-old company with real runway behind the rebrand: agents that close the books instead of people, founders who sold their previous company to NetApp, a twenty million dollar Series A, and a claim of fifty thousand hours of manual accounting eliminated in a year. The merch lands the joke — a cap reading "trigger", for wearing to meetings with auditors.
- This is Nominal's second identity in two years; the previous one is still shown in another studio's portfolio. Spending on self-definition is growing faster than the ARR it describes.
