Visual identity for a festival of home movies and family archives
A film festival about family memory borrowed its identity from the machines that recorded it.
Macedo Cannatà created a new visual identity for the fourteenth edition of Family Film Project, an international festival in Porto devoted to archive, memory and ethnography. Drawing on the interfaces of handycams, film cameras, televisions and mobile phones, the system uses screen corners, recording icons, shifting typographic widths and colours associated with older display technology across the logo, website, print, digital communication and motion.
Set in Oracle Triple
Insights- Camera interfaces are exactly the right source material for a festival about domestic archives. Screen corners, recording icons and playback symbols recall the devices through which private memory was captured and kept.
- Oracle Triple does more than provide a retro tone. Its three spacing settings echo older recording displays, allowing changes in width and rhythm to behave like part of the footage.
- Electric blue turns the Blue Screen of Death into a surface for memory, while fluorescent green recalls early television and computing. The technological failure built into the palette suits an archive of imperfect but emotionally precise images.
- The system has enough parts to evolve across future editions. Its risk is the same abundance that gives it life: dense icons and shifting character widths need a firm hierarchy when dates, venues and long film titles must be read quickly.
