We saw the brand as the sum of many parts, which meant we could move away from its most obvious DNA while still keeping the cultural programme aligned.
The point wasn’t to document a dancer. It was to let the body, motion blur and colour carry the sound, so the image evoked the feeling of the music, rather than describing it.
We wanted the thing most hotels avoid, not a literal depiction of the experience but something self-deprecating and funny, a way to tilt the lens and show the side of The Calile that’s curious, generous and playful.
The connection was not visual imitation, but a shared attitude to materials: use them in their real form and let each one do its job.
By the time the hotel project began, the relationship was already built on trust, understanding and alignment.

We didn’t begin by asking how many signs the hotel required. We asked which decisions needed support.

Studio Bland expanded its established identity for Brisbane's The Calile hotel into a flexible system of sub-identities for four recurring cultural-programme strands: Book Club, Swim Sets, Rooftop Harvest and Calile Culture. In collaboration with New Initiative, the studio used a restrained shared visual language, adding Editorial New to the existing type system while deploying photography, motion and a comic short film to create distinct experiences without losing connection to the parent brand.
Studio Bland developed a comprehensive, material-led identity for The Calile, a five-star urban resort in Brisbane, ahead of its 2018 opening. Drawing from Richards & Spence's travertine, concrete and brass architecture, the studio created a durable system spanning collateral, typography, illustration, digital touchpoints and minimally integrated wayfinding. Over eight years, Studio Bland stewarded and adapted the identity as the hotel grew before systems were transferred to its in-house Brisbane team.
