In their own words
The colour work was initially inspired by the idea of a shared love of the printed medium between ourselves and STUDY.
Then the idea of the initial landing experience of the website being almost like the front cover came to be, so our logo is always employed in black or white, and is only altered by the textures it interacts with.
We really wanted that simplicity and to only use colour in the absence of substantial text.
The full-stop was always something that STUDY employed, even before our collaboration.
By taking the names out of the actual studio name, it becomes much more about their team.
It’s quite powerful as a device when you see it out there, it adds a little something to the visual balance that we really liked.
To us, System85 is a beautiful typeface for larger headers and shorter words (so we used it for titles and links as an operating system perhaps would), but we felt it came across a little too dissonant when used in longer paragraphs at smaller sizes.
As long as every typeface you’re using has a rational justification and confined context in its usage, you can be quite liberal with your pairings.
The cross-hatches were originally inspired by the centre-point indicators on a camera, and initially were used to mark positions on our grid for our type to sit (specifically the ‘J,’ ‘B,’ and ’S’).
As the identity developed, these became graphical elements in their own right, as we found it accentuated our system. In its final form, we intruded brackets, slashes and several other small typographical elements, each sitting on their own gridline for use in very select contexts.

- ShiftWalk Crafts Playful, Structural Identity for Architecture Studio STUDY
Nottingham multidisciplinary creative studio ShiftWalk created a visual identity for San Francisco architecture practice STUDY. The system combines a restrained black-or-white logo, electric colour used around minimal text, material-like weathered textures, and a trio of typefaces under ShiftWalk's "Textural Bold" approach. A full stop in the STUDY. logotype reinforces the practice's collective, internationally operating character and adds a brutalist note.
- ShiftWalk creates grid-based identity for Jason Bailey Studio
Nottingham studio ShiftWalk created a new modular identity and website for Hackney-based photography and motion practice Jason Bailey Studio. The system uses a flexible typographic grid, J/B/S motifs, camera-inspired crosshatches and custom gradients to frame the studio's photographic work and adapt to variable case-study content.
