Montreal freelance designer and art director Jean-Michel Mercier created the identity for Berto, a new Italian osteria in Villeray founded by chef Riccardo Bertolino and sommelier Isabel Bordeleau. The system combines a custom monoline geometric-script wordmark, refined with type designer Alexandre Saumier Demers, with Bull-5 monospaced typefaces and a palette drawn from the restaurant interior. Applications span printed hospitality items, signage, apparel and engraved glassware, with photography by Eliane Cadieux.
This edition of The Edit spotlights five international branding projects across convenience retail, jewellery, upcycled products, natural wine and sleepwear. The lead project is Meat Studio's neon, 8-bit identity for Beijing convenience store Gogo, while the other featured work foregrounds sustainability, material storytelling, minimal typography and playful visual concepts.
The Brand Identity interviews The Designers Foundry and type designer David Einwaller about the development and re-release of the serif typeface Morion. Originally begun in 2014 and relaunched in 2020, the project expanded into a six-weight family and was accompanied by a vibrant anniversary poster and a conceptual specimen book. The discussion explores the evolution of the design, production challenges, and the collaboration between Einwaller and the New Zealand-based foundry.
