Giorgia Lupi and her team at Pentagram designed a commemorative identity for the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design, the programme bringing art, music and poetry to New York’s transit system since 1985. The anniversary mark extends the existing paired-circle identity with a geometric, monolinear 40. Its zero becomes a third circle enclosing Since 1985, set in Neue Haas Grotesk to match the established wordmark. A distinctive violet complements the programme’s core palette, developing into a violet-to-lavender gradient in digital applications. The campaign line Art Everywhere for Everyone follows a call-and-response rhythm that also guides the animation: the words unfold in two beats before the numeral draws on in one stroke. The identity appeared across subway placards, art cards, posters, digital artworks and online communication during programming running through September 2026.
Pentagram created a poetic, data-driven animation for the MTA Arts & Design 40th anniversary, displayed across 52 screens at New York’s Fulton Center. The piece visualizes each subway line as a character derived from real MTA data, transforming the daily commute into a lyrical exploration of movement, connection, and urban life.
