Interior concept for a future orbital habitat company
The radical part of this space station is not its size. It is the idea that privacy counts as infrastructure.
OMI created Thunderbird Space Station as a concept built on Max Space’s expandable habitat technology, showing how orbital living could become more efficient, flexible and human-centred. The project combines advanced engineering with industrial design to organise the habitat into eight functional sectors, including private crew quarters, research areas, hygiene zones, a communal kitchen hub and a retreat with panoramic views of Earth. OMI developed the concept to support both operational performance and psychological wellbeing through clear spatial zoning, warm communal areas and private sleeping pods. A carefully planned lighting system simulates natural daily rhythms to reduce fatigue and help astronauts stay aligned with ground control. The result is a liveable, intuitive station concept that increases volume and comfort while reducing launch complexity and cost.

Insights
- Max Space provides the expandable volume, but OMI makes that volume legible. Eight distinct sectors turn a large shell into a sequence of places for work, hygiene, conversation, sleep and looking back at Earth.
- Circadian lighting is treated as an environmental system rather than a decorative effect. Soft daily changes help preserve routine and keep the crew aligned with schedules on the ground.
- Private pods, plants and warm materials make the station feel psychologically credible. The pristine render is less honest about cables, restraints, storage and maintenance, all of which will compete with that calm in a working habitat.
- Thunderbird is still a concept tied to a planned 2029 launch. Full scale mockups and astronaut testing will matter more than another polished image because privacy, sound and emergency movement have to survive real microgravity operations.
