AREA 17 helped OpenAI evolve from a specialist research institute into a public-facing company ahead of major product launches. The studio created a digital identity and website platform that clarified OpenAI’s mission, organized content for research, deployment, and applications, and made complex AI topics more accessible to scientists, enterprises, and the public. AREA 17 also emphasized transparency, safety, and ethics to build trust and counter misconceptions around AI. The design system balanced technical sophistication with a more human, approachable feel through typography, color, and photography. To support rapid growth, AREA 17 implemented a scalable Twill CMS that enabled multiple internal teams to update content quickly while maintaining a consistent user experience.
